What is the biggest caliber of a shoulder mounted rifle (auto or semi-auto)?

Practically speaking once you exceed the .700 Nitro Express you are just asking to hurt yourself. This one produces something like 200 lbs. of recoil (if memory serves me correctly). In any case, it will be close to 200 lbs. of recoil. The .577 T-Rex is also up there but it is a smaller bore than the .700 NE. Most of the old punt guns (also called ‘bore guns’) were not intended to be shoulder-fired without support once you exceeded 8-bore (they were made at one time in 8-bore, 6-bore, 4-bore and 2-bore this one being the biggest). All the ones I’ve mentioned are real hunting guns. Of course there are .50 Caliber rifles chambered for the .50 Browning Machine-gun bullet, and even 25mm (anti-aircraft guns), but there are not intended as field guns nor are they practical for hunting. All the Nitro Express calibers (from about .470 NE through .700 NE) are dangerous game calibers as is the .577 T-Rex. The punt guns were intended to shoot water fowl often with the aid of a support. The big fifty & 25mm are too heavy and unwieldy to practically lug out into the field to hunt with.
