2001 Hyundai Elantra A/C Compressor Replacement?
I have a 2001 Hyundai Compressor that seized and broke the serpentine belt. I have pulled the old compressor out and I am looking for a remanufactured one. Most of the automotive stores have them. The only catch is the warranty. I must replace the accumulator/receiver drier and the orifice tube/expansion valve. I need to know the location of these two items and how to replace them. Also, should I replace the seals and what other steps are necessary to complete the installation (i.e. flushing the lines?, oil?, what refrigerant?). Any and all help is appreciated.
Replacing the orifice tube and drier is a MUST for this kind of situation. Were there any debris in the system that caused this failure the first time around the system is just going to grenade again.
With that said, these repairs really should be done by a repair facility because the labor can be warrantied if anything goes wrong, and you’re going to have a hard time charging the system correctly without an evacuator.
To answer your questions, the accumulator looks like a giant silver or black canister, usually near the firewall. Its very easy to find. The orifice tube is going to be inside the line. Look for a spot where the lines are joined, that looks like there is a small crimp. Pull that area apart and look for a syringe-looking thing that you can pull out. That is the orifice tube. If it is covered in metal completely (it is normal to have some on the screen), it is usually wise to replace the condenser and evaporator cores as well, but its your time and money, so its your decision.
As far as oils and refrigerants go, you have a 134a system that most likely uses PAG oil. put about 4 oz in the compressor and spin it a few times as necessary to get it all in, and dump about 3 oz in the accumulator before installing. This all varies with setup however..I belive your compressor should have oil capacity in the included manual somewhere, if not there are other ways to find it.
The process of charging the system is going to be very tough without an evacuator system. If you have one, though, you already know how to use it and how much refrigerant to put in. If not, just bring it to a shop that can.
Oh, and ALWAYS replace EVERY O-ring that you find in the system. You’ll regret it if you dont.
